OFSTED: Pupils' Voice Questionnaire

Helping Schools Demonstrate the Impact of Pupil Voice – at class, year, whole-school level, and across diverse pupil groups

OFSTED: Pupils' Voice

Our OFSTED Pupils' Voice Questionnaire enables schools to prepare for inspection with confidence, offering insights that go beyond whole-school trends. What makes our solution unique is that we deliver reports at tutor group, year group, and whole-school levels, along with analysis by gender, ethnicity, religion, disability, and neurodiversity. This allows every teacher and leader to understand how different groups of pupils experience school — and take targeted action that strengthens inclusion, improves perceptions, and provides clear evidence to Ofsted of meaningful pupil engagement.

About the Questionnaire

This is the official OFSTED-style Pupils' Voice Questionnaire — delivered, analysed, and reported by YouCanSay. We administer the survey to pupils and provide detailed, instantly available reports at class, year group, and whole-school levels.

Primary and Secondary School Versions

The questionnaire is available in both Primary and Secondary school versions, each carefully tailored to the needs and comprehension levels of the pupils.

The Primary version includes appealing graphics and integrated speech to support understanding and engagement among younger children. These features ensure that pupils can access and respond to questions confidently, even if they are still developing reading skills.

Aligned with the current Ofsted inspection framework, the questionnaire explores how pupils experience school across the four key judgement areas:

  • Quality of Education
  • Behaviour and Attitudes
  • Personal Development
  • Leadership and Management

It also includes questions covering important themes Ofsted pays close attention to, such as:

  • Safeguarding awareness
  • Emotional well-being
  • Feeling safe, respected, and supported

These areas are especially relevant when inspectors consider the effectiveness of leadership and the overall development and protection of pupils.

Supporting Equity, Inclusion and Diversity

In addition to exploring pupils’ experiences across Ofsted judgement areas, our questionnaire gathers anonymous profile information on:

  • Gender
  • Ethnicity
  • Religion
  • Disability
  • Neurodiversity

This allows us to report on how different groups of pupils experience school — helping leaders ensure they are meeting the needs of all children.

We highlight any disparities in experience, perception, or well-being between groups, so schools can take meaningful action to promote inclusion, fairness, and belonging across the whole community. These insights are not just available at whole-school or year-group level — they are included in class-level reports too.

Why Class-Level Reports Matter

Every tutor receives a dedicated report for their class, showing how their pupils feel about their education, their safety, and their well-being. These insights allow staff to:

  • Understand the specific needs and concerns of their pupils
  • See how different groups within the class — for example, girls and boys, or pupils with and without additional needs — may perceive the school differently
  • Address issues before they escalate
  • Make targeted changes that improve pupils’ experiences and attitudes
  • Provide clear, documented evidence that the school listens and responds to pupil feedback

This is more than data. It’s a powerful way to drive improvement at the frontline of school life.

How Our Reporting Helps with Inspection Readiness

Ofsted inspectors increasingly ask how schools act on pupil voice. Our reports enable you to show:

  • You listen: You collect feedback from pupils across all year groups and classes
  • You value their voice: Class-level reports go beyond generic surveys
  • You act on what you hear: Targeted improvements demonstrate a commitment to change
  • You track your progress: Results can be reviewed over time, showing impact

This approach provides tangible evidence of a culture where pupil voice shapes school improvement — exactly what inspectors look for.

Key Themes Explored Through the Questionnaire

The survey addresses topics that Ofsted explores in pupil interviews and observations, including:

  • Pupils’ engagement with and understanding of their learning
  • Behaviour, respect, and relationships across the school
  • Attitudes to challenge, ambition, and resilience
  • Personal safety, support, and awareness of safeguarding
  • Confidence in support structures and access to help when needed

Benefits for Schools

  • Identify and address issues before inspection
  • Demonstrate a culture of responsive leadership
  • Strengthen safeguarding and pastoral care
  • Provide evidence of pupil-centred improvement
  • Ensure inclusion and equity across pupil groups
  • Boost staff awareness and pupil engagement

How It Works

  1. Schools receive a link to the online questionnaire
  2. Pupils complete it in class (anonymously)
  3. Reports are generated instantly — school, year, and class
  4. Guidance is provided for interpreting and acting on results
  5. Progress can be reviewed, compared, and shared
